High-tech, yet involving relatively minor surgery, dental implants offer a permanent replacement for missing teeth. Made from titanium, dental implants are essentially artificial tooth roots. Dental implants are fixed into the jaw and over time the jaw bone grows around the surface of the implant. They provide a strong foundation onto which crowns, bridges or dentures can be securely attached.
An initial assessment appointment is required, during which x-rays are taken and your options discussed fully. Dental implants need a healthy foundation, if you are considering an implant your gum health will be reviewed to ensure your mouth is in optimum condition before the implant is placed.
Once your dental implant has been placed, it is left for a period of healing to allow it to knit to the bone. After the healing period, the top of the implant is exposed for an impression to be taken and sent to the dental technician for them to make the permeant restoration. This is then fitted two-three weeks later.
